Beat Licensing Explained: Leasing vs. Exclusive

You don’t buy beats. You license them. Here’s what that means.

Buying vs. licensing

When you “buy” a beat, you’re purchasing the right to use it. The producer keeps the copyright. You get a license that lets you record, distribute, and monetize your song on all platforms.

✓ WHAT YOU GET

Record vocals over the beat

Distribute on all DSPs

Monetize streams, sales, live

Keep it forever (perpetual license)

✗ WHAT YOU DON’T GET

Copyright — stays with the producer

Right to resell the beat

Right to sublicense to others

Content ID without permission

Non-exclusive vs. exclusive

Non-exclusive (Leasing WAV & Unlimited) — you license the beat, but the producer can also sell it to others. Multiple artists may release songs on the same beat. Your song is still 100% yours.

Exclusive — the beat is pulled from every platform. No more sales. You’re the only licensee. No beat that has already been sold under a non-exclusive license will ever be offered as Exclusive. If the Exclusive option is available, it means no one else holds a license on that beat.

When to go exclusive

Lead single, signature sound, music video — anything you want to own completely. For loosies and mixtape tracks, non-exclusive is the smart play.

What are stems?

Stems = individual instrument tracks (kick, snare, hi-hats, melody, bass, etc. as separate files). Without stems, you get one stereo mixdown. With stems, your engineer can adjust every element. Included in Unlimited Lease and Exclusive.

Common myths

Myth

“If I buy the beat, I own it.”

Reality

You own the license. The producer retains copyright. Industry standard.

Myth

“Non-exclusive = my song sounds like someone else’s.”

Reality

Your vocals, lyrics, melody, and mix make it unique. The beat is the foundation, not the building.

Myth

“I can register the beat on Content ID.”

Reality

Almost always prohibited without written authorization. Register your song (vocals + beat), not the beat alone.

Myth

“Free/$20 beats are the same quality as $50–100 beats.”

Reality

Price reflects mix quality, license terms, and originality. Cheap beats often mean restrictive licenses or uncleared samples.

Producer credit

Every license requires crediting the producer. Standard format: “(prod. by Nogar)” in the title or metadata. This is how the producer earns publishing royalties — and it’s a contractual obligation, not optional.

Skipping credit = license violation. The producer doesn’t get paid, and your license can be revoked. Refer to your license contract for the exact credit format.

How to choose

?Need stems? → Unlimited or Exclusive. Don’t need them? → Leasing WAV works.
?Key release? → Exclusive so nobody else can use it. Loosie or freestyle? → Non-exclusive.
?Tight budget? → Start with Leasing WAV. Upgrade later if the track takes off.
?Testing a beat? → Leasing WAV first, hear it with your vocals, then decide.
